Don’t commit “crape murder!”

Another month or so and crape myrtle pruning will be getting under way in my area (central Virginia, zone 7). Sadly, I’m likely to see a lot of “crape murder” going on, with a lot of beautiful trees being hacked off at eye level. It’s my number two pet peeve, just below “volcano mulching.” Here’s how to correctly prune crape myrtles:

If you are finding yourself feeling the need to chop off entire sections of your crape myrtle, you most likely picked the wrong variety for the spot. There are dwarf and even miniature cultivars of crape myrtle for spots where you don’t have as much space. Just check with your local independent garden center or nursery.
